FILMING Hints
· When filming, always have actors moving into the frame - you can edit out what you don't need, but you won't get awkward shots of actors waiting to start their lines · The equipment is your responsibility when it is out of school. Take care of it and ensure that it is handed in before period one on the next school day. · To gain different angle shots, always get the actors to act the full section out again, not just the words needed for that angle - this leads to disjointed dialogue · Take care with lighting - lighting equipment is available from the Media office · Think about the sound - filming near the A52 will mean that you hear the lorries passing over the voices of your actors · Don't talk over the shots that you are filming if you will need some of the audio. You can take your voice out, but will also have to take the background noise out so will have an uneven quality of background noise · Get advice - show your footage to your teacher after each filming session and be prepared for critical advice - this will often mean re-filming · You are marked for holding a steady shot - use a tripod · You are marked for shot variety but must have a reason for using each shot · Film each take to be longer than you actually want - especially action sequences - problems have arisen in the past when students want to fit footage to music, or use transitions and they need 6 seconds of footage (for example) but only have 4 seconds · IF IT IS RAINING WHEN YOU ARE FILMING YOU MUST USE AN UMBRELLA TO PROTECT THE CAMERA |
LIGHTING
If you film inside and do not use the lighting available, you are likely to get footage that lacks depth and has muted colours. Therefore, using the lights is vital if you are filming indoors. Remember that the lights get very hot. Switch them off when they are not being used, to give them chance to cool down and DON'T TOUCH THEM! The cables to the lights can cause a tripping hazzard - use masking tape to tape the cables to the floor SETTING THE WHITE BALANCE
This is vital to ensure that your colours are strong. Setting the white balance is different for different cameras. You will need to refer to the instruction manual and have a piece of pure white A4 paper available. Remember that if you move the camera, you will need to set the white balance again EDITING
Remember not to edit using your own login - always use the media login and stay on the same computer. When using Adobe Premier Pro, it is vital to set up your project with the correct settings. This will depend on the footage that you have created, so should be checked carefully first. Do this by copying the footage onto the media drive of the computer that you are working on. Then look at the properties of one of the clips. This will tell you the frame size and fps that you have recorded. The project must be set up with the same settings - ask your teacher if you are unsure. |
