Questions to ask
When considering representation you should ask certain questions:
· who is being represented?
· is the representation based on reality, or stereotypes?
· why have the makers decided to represent the group of people as they do?
· how will the audience react to the representation?
As you watch the extract for the first time try to work out what the text is trying to say about the particular group you are asked to write about. Is the text giving a positive or negative representation? Is the text adhering to stereotypes or trying to break stereotypes and give an individualistic representation of a character?
As you then watch the text for subsequent viewings, you need to work out how camera, sound, editing and mise en scene are used to create the representational stance that you have noticed.
